Wednesday's Worthy Words

Wednesday's Worthy Words
(what? I appreciate alliteration)

  • PizzaIDF.org (couldn't make this up). "On behalf of the soldiers of the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), we wish to thank the many, many people the world over who have sent Pizza, Burgers and a variety of other treats, and especially thank you to those who have sent pizza and encouraging messages of support and gratitude during the current campaign."

  • Slate sucks it up (Slate) . "Sucks is the most concise, emphatic way we have to say something is no good. As a one-syllable intransitive verb, it offers superb economy. Granted, some things require more involved assessments (like, say, James Joyce: I find his early work unparalleled in its style and its evocation of emotion, while his later writing became willfully opaque in a manner that leaves me cold). But other things don't require this sort of elaboration (like, say, John Grisham: He sucks)."

  • Kansas Creationists naturally deselected (SF Gate). "Conservative Republicans who pushed anti-evolution standards back into Kansas schools last year have lost control of the state Board of Education once again." ... "The former teacher had described evolution as an age-old fairy tale and a nice bedtime story unsupported by science."

  • I Feel Pretty / Oh So Pretty (TC Palm). "The skimpy dress a 53-year-old man reportedly was wearing while bicycling early Sunday morning was a little too short for the sheriff's deputy who stopped him. Especially when the deputy noticed Stephen Barfield wasn't wearing any undergarments, according to reports."

  • Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaw! (South Bend). "During a practice ride at Murray State University in Kentucky, a chocolate bull bucked Schneider onto his back. As he tried to sit up, the animal's hind hoof cracked his jaw and split his neck open. His jugular vein swelled but didn't break. Schneider fell back to the dirt. His tongue had nearly been sliced off." ... Despite his nearly fatal smashup, the Hagerstown native plans to ride again soon. "I figure I can't stop living at 22 because I could be walking to class and break my leg," he says, straining to enunciate certain words."

  • Zimbabwe officially now too lazy to keep printing money (BBC). "Zimbabwe's central bank has announced that three zeros will be taken off every banknote to help consumers deal with inflation of almost 1,200%." The previous official exchange rate was 101,000 Zimbabwe dollars to $1USD, although BBC claims the real exchange rate was four times that.

Apparently the money presses are the only thing that actually works in the country.
