Nobel Committee's Decision Courts Controversy
WSJ.com | High, apple-pie-in-the-sky hopes
Fun facts. Willy Brandt had been chancellor for two years before he got nominated. Obama had been president TWO WEEKS before he got nominated.
Don't get me wrong, it is quite possible that he might do something worth the award. Decent people should fervently hope that he works to fulfill its promise.
However, to say that he has already done enough to merit the accolade is an affront to people who have actually (not just potentially) contributed to humanity. These people have earned the award with their work, often through stirring acts of personal courage and sacrifice.
I would be infuriated were I Nelson Mandela.
EDIT: In all fairness, my disgust is directed toward the Nobel Committee and not the man. I think his remarks upon receiving the award struck exactly right tone. Very well done.
