Specter Says Gonzales Is Harming Justice Department

The AG should be sacked, even in the absence of 'credible allegations of wrongdoing,' to use the White House's delightful phrase.

He oversaw the firing of nearly 10% of the nation's US Attorneys in a remarkably short period of time. It should be evident that this is no small thing. US Attorneys require Senate approval (briefly changed to be Presidential approval under the PATRIOT Act). Getting rid of so many, so fast, is sort of a big deal.

Now, let's assume that we take Mr. Gonzalez at his word. He only listened to advisors, serving as an 'aggregator' of their opinions but not meaningfully adding in his own opinion. Let's assume that the firings were in fact based on credible grounds, and not politically motivated. Let's also assume that Mr. Gonzalez did not seriously scrutinize those grounds, relying solely on his advisors' opinion.

So, taking everything in the light most favorable to the AG:
-He allowed his subordinates to guide him to a major personnel decision without exercising any independent inquiry
- He cannot recall an affirmative reason for the mass firings of major personnel in his department.

Interpreting his comments at face value, the Attorney General is shockingly incompetent at basic management. This is not a desirable quality in someone with supervisory authority over literally tens of thousands of employees.
